Our Mission: Decriminalize Drivers & Decriminalize Students
We, the undersigned community and civil rights advocacy organizations, unite in support of the Decriminalize Montgomery County Campaign with a shared commitment to advocating for justice, equity, and improved well-being for all residents of Montgomery County, Maryland. We call for urgent decriminalization and investment in our communities, as well as redress of issues without policing and incarceration. We recognize that Black and brown members of our community have borne the brunt of our historical reliance on police and prisons through excessive policing, over incarceration, and police-inflicted violence. We believe that safety for all community members requires non-violent and non-carceral solutions. Now in 2023, we aim to create safer and more equitable communities by advocating for transformative change in two key areas:
We advocate for the banning of consent searches as a means of promoting safety. Consent searches – which grossly over-represents Black and Brown drivers in traffic stops – very rarely uncover evidence of any criminal activity and often leave drivers scarred. We propose an approach that boosts traffic safety by banning consent searches. By ending the practice of consent searches, we strive to create a safer road environment that treats all residents fairly and reduces the potential for racially-biased enforcement. Decriminalize drivers by banning consent searches entirely. This approach requires the passage of the Freedom to Leave Act.
We stand for the well-being and success of our youth. To that end, we call for a redirection of resources away from punitive measures that contribute to the
school-to-prison pipeline, like policing in schools. School policing unfairly harms Black and brown students, as well as students with disabilities. We must create an educational environment that empowers all students, regardless of their background. By investing in restorative justice practices and proactive student support– over policing–we envision a system where students can thrive, not get trapped in the school-to-prison pipeline.
Decriminalize students by investing in programs that foster a positive school climate, not a carceral one. This approach includes investing in restorative justice, mental health support, and positive youth development programming and staff in MCPS.
